St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit back on the prowl

CANTON — After more than four months without their four-legged deputy, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department reinstated their K-9 Unit Tuesday.

The unit, which was suspended on Feb. 28 due to a short fall in staff at the sheriff’s department, Undersheriff Scott F. Bonno said.

With the recent graduation of three new cadets from the David Sullivan-St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton, Deputy Andrew J. Ashley was able to return to his duties in the K-9 unity with Hershey - a 7-year-old chocolate Labrador at his side, who he has been partnered with for six years.

The decision to suspend the unit in February was a difficult one, Mr. Bonno said, adding that “K-9 Hershey is a highly valued service and investigatory asset utilized by the department in its day to day operation.”

“Having the cadets graduate from the academy and take an active role in the department will enable us to better handle our investigative and transport mandates which will also allow Deputy Ashley to work with his K-9 as necessary,” Mr. Bonno said.
