NORFOLK - A Norwood-Norfolk Central School graduate who now attends St. Lawrence University in Canton sought board of education approval this week to open the school’s gymnasium for basketball games and also assist as an unpaid volunteer with the school’s basketball program.

Josh Eng told board members he already has his required certification and just needed their approval to start. He is also an active member of the Potsdam Rescue Squad, he said.

Superintendent James M. Cruikshank said he had been approached by Mr. Eng about offering his volunteer services. He said basketball coaches usually open the gym for games, but they’re not always available.

“They find it hard to schedule, especially in the summer. We don’t really have anyone else. Josh was interested in getting involved,” he said.

The only concern he had after consulting with their attorney was the liability issue. He said the school’s insurance carrier would cover Norwood-Norfolk Central School students, but any others who came to play, such as recent high school graduates, would need to have their own liability insurance in order to use the school facility.

“They cannot be recent graduates coming back. They’re not covered under our liability insurance. Our liablity wouldn’t cover 20-somethings,” Mr. Cruikshank said.

Mr. Eng, however, would be covered as long as he was cerified by the state and approved by the district’s board of education, he said.

“They said, really, for insurance purposes, we want someone with school backing. I wanted to get it on your radar. This is something we need to talk about, and the liability issue comes into play. But it will be a good conversation,” Mr. Cruikshank said.

While no decision was made this week, board President Jon D. Hazen told Mr. Eng they would discuss it and get back to him with an answer.
