Democrat Michele W. McQueer, Hammond, will run against Republican Joel J. LaPierre, Fowler, for the District 4 St. Lawrence County legislative seat being vacated by Legislator Alex A. MacKinnon, R-Fowler.

Mrs. McQueer has been interested in the post for a while. She unsuccessfully ran against Mr. MacKinnon four years ago but came within 200 votes.

Her interest has not waned and she wants to join what she hopes will remain a Democratic majority.

“I’m proud of what the majority has accomplished — the way they work together to make the county better,” she said.

Mrs. McQueer said she supported the board’s drive to raise the sales tax in exchange for a property tax reduction.

“I think that was a step in the right direction,” she said. “I’m excited about the five-year plan. I think that’s positive for the county.”

If elected, Mrs. McQueer said, she wanted to find ways to boost the county’s prospects by bringing in more jobs.

“I think the county has a revenue problem,” she said.

So far, Mrs. McQueer is the only female candidate running for the Board of Legislators.

“The women in this county need a female voice on the board,” she said.

Mrs. McQueer said she plans a door-to-door campaign.

“I think it’s very effective. I think it’s important to meet people,” she said.
