On the evening of June 21, more than 100 people gathered at Heritage Park in Canton to welcome summer and to raise funds for the care and maintenance of the park.
The Grasse River Heritage Summer Solstice Celebration was a tremendous success because of its many volunteers and supporters. Participants of all ages, with some arriving on their bicycles, enjoyed the festivities including walking the trail on Falls Island, dancing around the 12-foot Maypole, and enjoying “the local treats and local beats” of wonderful desserts and great music.
A special thank you to the following people who donated their time and talent, allowing us to make this event possible for our community as well as to surpass our fundraising goal to benefit Heritage Park: Canton artist Nancy Casey, who created the charming artwork of HP used on the various promotional materials for the event and did the printing; SUNY Canton Dining Services, which prepared the variety of desserts using locally sourced ingredients such as eggs, honey, maple syrup and strawberries; local musicians Noel de la Motte, Ayrn Rivers, Camilla Ammirati, Don Woodcock, Bob Valley, John and Bonnie Danis, Tim Savage, Dan Galiardi, Zachary Barnes, Chase McLoughlin and Eric Galiardi, who performed hand drumming, banjo, fiddle, guitar and jazz throughout the two-hour event; several local artists and crafts people including Linda Sherz Allen, Mary Harding, Ron Larsen, Jack Taylor, Melissa Burchard, Nancy Casey, Judy Toporcer, Judith Utter, David Crowell, Michiko Taylor, Susan Ward and Allison Brant, who provided unique items for our silent auction; the local quilting group Fiberistas for its premiere exhibition of “Slices of Main Street Canton,” creatively displayed on the park’s bowstring bridge; the Canton Corning Plant for their generous sponsorship support; Dan Fay and the Hoot Owl for the loan of tables, stools, tablecloths and tents; Gloria Martin at North Country Savings Bank; Robin Durocher and the St. Lawrence University Athletic Department; Sally Hill at the Canton Chamber of Commerce; Maria Corse at the Deep Root Center; Katie Kennedy, Marsha Sawyer and the 12 students from the St. Lawrence University CSTEP & McNair Achievement Program, who helped set up, clean up and everything in between; as well as John Larrance, Carol Coakley, Sandy Funkhouser, Charles and Brooke Rouse, Elaine White, Joe Randi, Ken Hebb and Louis Tremaine.
