Norfol Rovers U18 team hands Ogdensburg Maples First Loss

OGDENSBURG - Breaking through for their first win of the summer, the Norfolk American Legion Post 925 Rovers handed the Ogdensburg Maples their first loss in a 4-2, 18 Under Baseball decision at Father Martin Park on Wednesday.

Winning pitcher Jake Vierno and Isaac Ward stroked singles in a decisive three-run third inning where the Rovers capitalized on a wild pitch on a third strike, a hit batsman and an infield throwing error.

“This was just basic baseball tonight. Their pitcher threw well and they made the plays in the field that they needed to make and they deserved to win,” said Maples Coach Steve LaRose.

Vierno sealed a complete game win by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning and finished with a six-strikeout, six-hitter.

The Maples’ combination of Alex Hayes (5 innings) and Jordan Miller (2 innings) allowed eight hits.

Ward stroked two singles for the winners, Mike Burns doubled and Hadyn St. Hilaire, Isaiah Dillabough, Zach Brock, Josh LaShomb and Vierno all added one single.

The Maples, who visit Plattsburgh today, scored both of their runs in the fourth inning where Andrew Cole drilled a double and Jordan Miller singled. Mike Martin singled twice and Bryant Wentworth and Lefty Arsenault each stroked singles.

Coached by Terry Paige, the Rovers are slated to play against the Clinton County Mariners in Plattsburgh next Tuesday before making their home debut at Memorial Field in Raymondville against Malone starting at 6 p.m.
