LOWVILLE — The Republican gubernatorial candidate is expected to be in town Tuesday for the opening of the Lewis County Fair.
Rob Astorino, the Westchester County executive who is challenging Democratic Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo this fall, plans to attend the 10 a.m. opening ceremonies and the 20th annual cheese auction afterward, according to Lewis County Republican officials.
“We’re interested in welcoming Rob Astorino and expect him to be a very active bidder in the cheese auction and support our local agricultural community,” local GOP chairman Michael F. Young said.
The cheese auction — during which 20-, 10- and 5-pound blocks of cheddar cheese donated by Kraft Foods are auctioned off — is held at the Dairy Industry Building.
Last year’s event brought in $11,437 toward local youth agricultural activities and upkeep on the dairy building, buoyed by a top bid for the donated 20-pound block of $2,001.
