WELLESLEY ISLAND — The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved $105 million for major improvements to the island’s border station.
The funding was included as part of the Fiscal Year 2015 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill.
“Investing in this facility will give local businesses the best chance to grow through trade and help the local community capitalize on the port as an economic engine while simultaneously enhancing security,” said Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, one of the supporters of the funding.
The money is expected to cover the first of two work phases, including renovations to commercial and passenger vehicle inspection lanes, a commercial inspection warehouse, an impound lot and a new veterinary services building.
Two parcels of land also will be purchased.
