Seaway Festival kicks off Friday

The 54th Annual Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival will kick off with a comedy extravaganza Friday night.

Ogdensburg native, Hollywood actor and comedian Mark Valley will introduce comedy hypnotist Don Swan at the Odd Fellows Community Hall at 1111 Linden St.

“I’m looking forward to the show,” Mr. Valley said Wednesday. “Don Swan is a hilarious guy and it’s going to be a lot of fun. Everything will benefit the Seaway Festival, which is a great cause.”

Without giving too much away, Mr. Swan said audience members can expect to see a group of people who think they are on a roller coaster, someone imitate Elvis, Madonna, and Michael Jackson and a man imitate giving birth on stage.

“I ask people to come with an open mind and to lend me the use of their imaginations for one hour,” Mr. Swan said. “It’s a good, clean show. I am not the star. The volunteers on stage are.”

The Seaway Festival is a proud tradition in the Ogdensburg community, organizers say.

“The Seaway Festival has always brought in a lot of homecomings, family and class reunions,” Chairman Christopher S. Cole said Wednesday. “With all of the people in town, it nearly doubles the city’s population. Hotels and restaurants are all busy. It’s an economic stimulus for the city.”

Throughout the week, Mr. Cole said there are numerous free events, including nightly concerts in Library Park, kids’ games, craft shows and karaoke.

“We try to make everything free or at least low-cost to the public,” Mr. Cole said. “We really rely on our $2 button sales. The Ogdensburg Seaway Festival is a not-for-profit organization and we are solely dedicated to the community and helping the city thrive.”
