Assault trial of a Pamelia man to begin Monday

A former Pamelia man is expected to go to trial on Monday on assault charges stemming from the alleged beating of a newborn.

On Feb. 13, Willie D. Smith III, 27, town of Pamelia, was charged with first- and second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly causing grave risk of death to a newborn child by striking the infant numerous times.

His trial is scheduled to start on Monday in Jefferson County Court. Judge Kim H. Martusewicz would preside over the case.

It is alleged that between March 13, the child’s date of birth, and May 13, Mr. Smith created risk of death to the boy by physically abusing him, causing broken bones, bruises and scarring.

Police said at the time that the child suffered fractures to both of his arms and legs. It further is alleged that the suspect struck the child on the head with his fists, causing fractures to the child’s skull and bleeding and swelling on the infant’s brain.

As of Friday, Mr. Smith’s relationship with the unidentified newborn was unclear.
