LOWVILLE — Following the investigation of an incident June 24 at Lewis County Jail, on Wednesday the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office charged Verne L. Harris Jr., 17, with second-degree felony assault.
Deputies said the inmate, whose home address was not in the report, acted in a disruptive manner and was calmed down and warned several times by officers to stop the behavior. He allegedly became more agitated, attempting to harm himself and officers around him. During the altercation, officers who were trying to protect him all fell down, deputies said. One officer struck his head against a solid fixed object and sprained his ankle. The suspect was subdued.
The injured officer, whose name was not disclosed by deputies, was taken to Lewis County General Hospital and treated for a concussion, ankle sprain and bite mark on his arm.
Mr. Harris was arraigned in village of Lowville court Wednesday and remanded back to jail on $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. Deputies said he awaits possible grand jury action.
