Garry T. McGivney


Garry T. McGivney, 75, of Watertown, died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was born on February 11, 1939 in Malone, N.Y. to his parents Blanche (Tavernia) McGivney and Hugh McGivney.

Mr. McGivney graduated as salutatorian from St. Joseph’s Academy in Malone, NY. He attended SUNY Plattsburgh and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1961. While attending SUNY Plattsburgh, he was a founding member of the Pi Alpha Nu fraternity. He served in the Air Force as an Airman First Class from 1961 to 1966 and was honorably discharged. After leaving the Air Force, Mr. McGivney began what would become a 30-year career at the NY State Department of Labor. He retired in 1996.

He was married to Sallie Prentice in 1969 in Watertown. They had one child, Kathleen. The marriage ended in divorce.

Mr. McGivney was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Elk’s Club. He supported many local charitable organizations including the establishment of the North Pleasant Street Scholarship Fund and the John C. Prentice Memorial Scholarship Fund. He was a devoted parishioner of Holy Family Church and was a major benefactor of Holy Family Church and all the other Catholic churches in Watertown.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen McGivney and her husband Adam Moore of New York City; his granddaughter, Ariel Sobel of California; six brothers and sisters, Patrick McGivney of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Daniel McGivney and his wife, Linda of Malone, Betsy McGivney of Malone, Peter McGivney and his wife, Elaine of Brushton, Gertrude Jock and her husband, Gerald of Malone, and Bryan McGivney and his wife, Liz of Bangor; sister-in-law Judy McGivney of Brandon; 19 nieces and nephews, 21 grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Dennis McGivney; nephew, Robert McGivney; uncles, Blaise, Zeno, Donald, Leo, Edward, Leonard, Bernard, and William Tavernia; and aunts, Mary Daley, Anna Gonyea, Rita Rouselle, Bernice Avery, Marion Wood and Mildred Robideau.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1PM on Friday, July 25 at Holy Family Church, Watertown.

A private burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fort Covington Street, Malone.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Northern New York Community Foundation or the Metastases Research Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Arrangements are with TLC Funeral Home, Inc.
