Participation in Brook Haven fundraising tourney doubles

LOWVILLE — Participation in the June 28 Brook Haven House Golf Tournament jumped from 13 teams to 22 under its new name, the Willard J. Moser Memorial Golf Tournament.

“We had almost double the teams prior and we attribute this to the tournament being in Willard’s name,” said event organizer Shelley Stevens.

Moser passed away last fall following an industrial accident in Lowville. He had been treasurer of the board of directors for Brook Haven House, a Christian home in Carthage for women seeking help for an unplanned or crisis pregnancy. Mothers are allowed to stay at the home for up to a year following the birth of their child. Currently, one mother and her son reside at the house.

“We presented a music box globe to Susan Moser, Mr. Moser’s widow, in appreciation for all the Moser’s have done and what it meant to us at the Brook Haven House,” said Brook Haven house mother Joan Sherwood. “We just appreciate all our golfers and sponsors for making a wonderful tribute to the memory of Willard.”

The event raised $4,300 towards Brook Haven’s general operating costs. Prior to the tournament, Sherwood said Moser had been invested in the Brook Haven mission and the mothers and children who stayed there, leading it to be only fitting to rename the tournament, in its fifth year, after him.

“It is our intent that next year will become the second annual Willard J. Moser Memorial tournament,” said Sherwood, who noted the home is always accepting donations.

Taking first in the tournament was the team of Keith Haggerty, Kyle Makuch, Bruce Shadhan and Ken Lamonte. Second place went to Reggie Cullen, Milton Cowles, Doug LaTray and Matt Rebb. Third place was awarded to Jason Zehr, Kenny Russell, Justin Widrick and Jeremy Gillen.
