HARRISVILLE — A 5K run/walk here on Saturday, July 26, will help raise money for the final phase of Harrisville Free Library’s construction project.

“We’re in phase four, which is finishing up our handicap/disability accessible project and what’s left to be done downstairs,” said Pamela A. Conlin, assistant to the library director.

This marks the third year the library has hosted the race.

The first event, which raised $1,000, helped fund renovations to the 8209 Main St. facility’s second floor. That project was additionally funded through two $10,000 grants, $26,469 from a New York State Public Library Construction grant and an estimated $5,000 in community donations.

Last year’s race saw 65 registered participants and brought in roughly $900 towards the final project.

Recently, the library was awarded 90 percent of its $27,374 New York State Library Construction grant, library director Nicole Spencer said.

With phase four estimated at $40,000 and the library receiving a higher percentage of funding than initially anticipated, affiliates were left to raise roughly $19,000. The library brought in $14,000 towards that match and is looking to raise an additional $5,000 this year.

This year’s race is open to adults as well as children accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The race will begin just outside the library in the Scenic View parking lot.

Registration cost is $12 per person and $22 if participants want a T-shirt. Registration will be available the day of the race. Forms are available at

Participants may pay by cash, check or PayPal.

Awards will be available to the first place finisher, as well as first in the 18 years or under category and the over 65 category. Fruit and water will be provided.

“We will have some fitness stuff for everyone that was donated by Nice N Easy, and also we had a dozen walking sticks donated,” Spencer said.

“We need you to come out and support our local library,” said Conlin.

Sign-in will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the race starting at 9 a.m.
