WADDINGTON — State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation officials are investigating a report a man was struck by lightning shortly before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at Coles Creek State Park.
Regional parks Director Kevin A. Kieff said he was made aware of the report Wednesday morning.
The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital by the Waddington Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Mr. Kieff said he learned later Wednesday morning that the man was going to be discharged.
“I spoke with staff at Coles Creek who had spoken with the man,” Mr. Kieff said. “He was being discharged and planning to return to the park.”
While social media reports indicate the man was camping at a tent site, Mr. Kieff said he could not confirm whether he was using a tent or a camper.
“We’re waiting to complete the accident report until we can talk to the gentleman involved,” Mr. Kieff said. “We’re really glad it worked out this way and no one was seriously injured.”
A heavy thunder and lightning storm moved through the Waddington area shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday.
