North Carolina man charged with aggravated DWI

WATERTOWN — Ronald L. Ellis, 52, of Shelby, N.C., was charged by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 12:03 a.m. Friday with one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated after his vehicle was stopped on Interstate 81 near Exit 45 in the town of Watertown.

Deputies said his truck was pulled over when it was observed traveling on the highway at about 35 miles per hour prior to reaching the ramp for Exit 45, and then maintaining that speed while on the ramp. His blood alcohol content was 0.25 percent, deputies said. A BAC of 0.08 percent or higher is considered proof of intoxication under state law. Aggravated DWI is charged when the BAC is 0.18 percent or higher.

He is to appear in Town Court.
