SACKETS HARBOR — During the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site’s annual War of 1812 Living History Weekend, a granite monument will be dedicated at noon Sunday to the American forces who served during the May 29, 1813, Second Battle of Sackets Harbor.
People attending the dedication will gather at the monument on Ontario Street west of the historic site to hear remarks by several guest speakers, highlighting the battle and its significance during the war years.
The state Division of Veterans’ Affairs funded the 200th anniversary monument to the historic site’s nonprofit support group, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield Alliance Inc. The text on the monument reads: “To the memory of the gallant United States Regulars and New York State Troops, Army, Navy, Marines, and Militia; who stood firm against the British Crown Forces, May 29, 1813.”
The dedication concludes the site’s annual War of 1812 Weekend, featuring living history demonstrations all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
