WATERTOWN — So what would make a good name for Watertown’s new minor league hockey team?

Fans will have a chance to name the Federal Hockey League team, according to its owners.

Top Shelf Hockey LLC announced Tuesday that interested fans can start nominating their choices for the team’s name via email to TopShelfHockeyLLC@gmail.com.

The contest will proceed in two stages.

On Sunday, the top five names will be posted to the team’s official Twitter account (twitter.com/@hockeywatertown), the Federal Hockey League Web page (federalhockeyleague.net) and the Federal Hockey League Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TheFHL).

In the second stage, fans can vote for their favorite name from the top five choices to TopShelfHockeyLLC@gmail.com (maximum one vote per email address). The final results will be announced by Aug. 8.

Fans must include their name and contact information with their team name suggestions. The person who nominates the winning team name will win two season tickets for the inaugural 2014-15 season. The contest is open to anyone 18 or older.

The team’s logo will be announced during the coming weeks. The team will play at the city-owned Watertown Municipal Arena at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Top Shelf announced that the team’s colors will be black, silver and white.

Top Shelf Hockey LLC is a local group of Watertown area residents who want to keep professional hockey in the area and has been awarded a franchise in the Federal Hockey League.

The team replaces the Watertown Privateers, which folded after last season. Some former Privateers players will play for the new team. Former Privateers coach Brent Clarke will coach and serve as director of hockey operations for the new team.
