The final play of Wednesday’s 18U Baseball game at Father Martin was all too familiar for the players and coaches of the Ogdensburg Maples.

Brockville secondbaseman Tyson Kirkey charged a slow roller and neatly made an accurate barehanded throw to first for the final out of a 3-1 win and stranded the potential tying runs at third and secondbase.

On Tuesday night at the Maples’ home field Norfolk shortstop Jake Vierno made a very nice play to secure a 7-5 win in the ninth inning.

Wednesday’s win was dictated by pitching.

Brockville starter Devin Burns scattered seven singles, struck out nine and strung six scoreless innings after the Maples took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Peyton Lalone singled and scored on a single by Lefty Arnsenault.

Maples starter Breton LaRose and Arsenault who pitched three innings in relief struck out eight and allowed just five hits.

“We have pitched well enough to win every game this summer. In the games we have lost we just haven’t consistenly made the big play or gotten the big hit.” said Maples Coach Steve LaRose after his team dropped to 15-4-1 heading into a game tonight at Norfolk.

“Tonight we had a chance to make plays to stop all of their runs. Their pitcher threw a very nice game and they made the plays.

The Potsdam combination of Will Coleman and Ben Miller keyed the Bunnies’ scoring. Coleman doubled in the fourth inning and Miller stroked a two-run single. The Bunnies (32-17) added a run in the fifth on an errant pickoff throw.

Lalone and Bryant Wentworth both stroked two singles for the Maples and Arsenault, DaKota Brady and Breton LaRose all singled.

“Overall the guys of have gotten the most of who we have had available,” said LaRose.

“Tonight we were missing two of our best players and hitters in Andrew Cole (working) and Seth Pinkerton (injury).

ROVERS TRIM MAPLES

The Norfolk Rovers made good on their second chance to close out the Ogdensburg Maples in Tuesday’s U18 Baseball action at Father Martin Field.

In the bottom of the ninth inning with the tying runs at second and thirdbase shortstop Jake Vierno ranged up the middle to snare a groundball and made a strong throw to firstbase to secure a 7-5 victory.

Vierno also pitched the first seven innings of the contest where the Maples pulled into a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run infield single by Andrew Cole.

Issac Ward picked the victory with a two-inning stint in relief and Alex Hayes suffered the loss after relieving Maples’ starter Mike Martin in the seventh inning.

Isaiah Dillabough lined four singles and scored two runs for the Rovers who scored three times in the top of the ninth inning.

Mike Burns stroked his second single of the game in the ninth and Brandon Noble completed a four-hit day with a single.

In previous at bats Noble ripped two singles and a triple.

Zach Brock and Josh LaShomb stroked two singles and Vierno added a single.

Andrew Cole and Peyton Lalone each singled twice for th Maples and Lefty Arsenault connected for a double.

Bryant Wentworth, Jordan Miller and Karter VanArnam added singles for the Maples.
