Motorcycle crash injures seven people at Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair

GOUVERNEUR — A motorcycle stunt show crash Thursday night at the Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair injured seven people, according to emergency responders.

The motorcyclist, Sampie A. Noakes, 37, performing as Patch McGillicutty, crashed at about 8:40 p.m. during the Wall of Death stunt show, which was being performed in a ring as onlookers watched from above. The motorcycle went into the crowd, hitting several spectators, after its foot board caught the cable at the top of the ring, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies. Mr. Noakes was thrown over the crowd and landed about 20 feet away near a trailer, according to Donald D. Thompson, a critical care technician hired for the fair and one of the first at the scene.

Five adults, including Mr. Noakes, and two children were taken to Gouverneur Hospital, most with small cuts and bruises.

“It was chaos, when you have a bunch of people around like that,” Mr. Thompson said. “It had the potential to be a lot worse than it was.”

Cory M. Thompson, Donald’s nephew and a fellow technician, said Mr. Noakes was talking and alert,

“He had a long fall, but was conscious,” he said.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, but was not used toevacuate any of the injured. The crash was under investigation.

Village and state police, deputies, the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department and the Gouverneur Rescue Squad all responded.

Thursday was the first day for the stunt show at this year’s fair.

Times staff writer Gordon Block contributed to this report.
