MASSENA - Alcoa Foundation has awarded an $85,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Massena to launch a pilot program to assist youth in the community prior to the Club moving into its new home on Bayley Street in Massena.
The Alcoa Foundation funds will allow the Club to offer three national Boys & Girls Club programs to approximately 100 Massena-area youth during the 2014-2015 school year at a temporary location while fundraising efforts continue and the permanent Club site is renovated. The initial programs will focus on academic intervention and leadership development.
“The Boys & Girls Club will have a positive impact on Massena because it will provide a safe, welcoming place for children from Massena and the surrounding communities,” said Timmy J. Currier, president, Boys & Girls Club of Massena. “It will offer educational, recreation, arts and technological programs where kids will play, learn and grow under the guidance and supervision of caring adults acting as positive role models and mentors.”
“We are very pleased to be able to support the Boys and Girls Club effort,” said Bob Lenney, Primary Location Manager for Alcoa’s Massena Operations. “This is an important community initiative that will help our youth to develop the academic, social and leadership skills that are critical to their future success. We hope that others in the community will see the benefits of the Club during the pilot program and will also support the effort.”
The location of the one-year pilot program and other details will be announced by the Club soon. The organization’s goal is to complete renovations and open the Club’s permanent home in September, 2015 with a full slate of programs.
“Our club is very lucky to have the support of Alcoa, their employees and the Alcoa Foundation,” Currier said. “Alcoa continues to be a great community partner. With the Foundation’s support we are able to start serving the kids of the greater Massena community far sooner than we anticipated.”
