Cornell University Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County teamed up with FISHCAP to create a Fishing With the Pros program to complete this summer’s Adirondack Guide Series.

The guide series, which provided teens traditional Adirondack Adventures, also included Top Shot: 4H Shooting Sports and Wilderness Backpacking.

The first Fishing With The Pros session began on Monday with Thomas Garvin of South Colton, John Guiney of Parishville, Eben Thatcher of Canton and Brodie Harper-Moulton of Massena fishing on the St. Lawrence River out of Hosmer’s Marina in Ogdensburg.

While experiencing the inspiring and majestic vistas and venues of the mighty St. Lawrence River participants received instruction from: longtime fishing guide and author Captain Mike Seymour, Hank Bouchard who operated the St. Lawrence Sports Shop for many years and co-founded the enormously successful St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen’s Club Walleye Restocking program, longtime television personality and professional fishermen Don Meissner and an up-and-coming young tournament fisherman James Gibson.

In the course of the day the participants caught northern pike, smallmouth bass, perch and walleye. They were also treated to a shoreline lunch and the day was completed with Captain Seymour offering a demonstration for filleting a walleye.

“Being from Massena I have fished the St. Lawrence River before but I have never been out on this part of the river,” said Harper-Moulton.

“It was really a great day.”

Bouchard concentrated on trolling techniques for northern pike in a boat provided by Blevins Brothers. Seymour concentrated on drifting and casting with lures and live bait and at the close the of day trolled a spot near Big Island which led to the landing of three Walleyes.

Gibson, a member of the Hosmer’s Marina staff, provides poles and equipment for participants to learn the latest techniques of drop shotting and tube jigs.

In his first attempt at tube jig fishing Guiney landed one of his biggest smallmouthes ever on a chartruse jig.Fishing with the Pros will continue with participants enjoying an overnight outing at the Jelly Bean Campgrounds in Brasher Falls while learning flyfishing techniques to fish for muskie and other species in the St. Lawrence River.

The final stop will be at Dodge Pond for a day of traditional pond fishing out of canoes.

“In July we have offered fishing instruction for students in fourth and sixth grades at Gouverneur, Edwards-Knox, Lisbon, St. Lawrence Central and Norwood-Norfolk,” said Meissner.

“We wanted do something for teenagers 13-18 and allow them to enjoy the total experience of fishing and outdoor life.”

Helping the anglers experience the outdoors were Coopperative Extension counselors Ryan Arno of Potsdam and Ashley Tranello of Churchville who are both graduates of SUNY Potsdam.

“It was very happy to be involved in this program and help get young people involved in fishing,” said Bill Hosmer, the owner of Hosmer’s Marina.

“We have a full line of equipment and bait so we had everything they would need.”

Young anglers will fish again out of Hosmer’s Marina to start the second session on Monday.
