POTSDAM - Rev. William R. Cuthbert of Potsdam was recently recognized with the Service Above Self Award by the Rotary Club of Potsdam.

The club honored Cuthbert with the award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Potsdam community.

The retired Baptist minister served as pastor of the First Baptist Church (ABC) in Potsdam and South Colton Community (United Methodist) Church, before his retirement in 1997.

Cuthbert currently serves on the board of the Canton Enriched Housing Program, the board of United Helpers and the board of Mayfield Apartments. He is a surrogate decision maker for the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and also serves on the board of visitors of Sunmount Developmental Center.

He is chairman of the New York State Baptist Foundation for Campus Ministry, and served as clerk of the North Country Association of American Baptist Churches.

He served for 21 years as chairman of the Potsdam Neighborhood Center Advisory Board and as president of the board of directors of Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Cuthbert has also been active in the Boy Scouts, serving as both assistant district commissioner for Cub Scout roundtables and as the institutional representative for Potsdam area scouts.

Cuthbert was a member of the St. Lawrence County Community Development Program board and served as president of the County Community Services board. He has served on numerous other community boards and advisory groups, including TRIAD, Dodge Pond, Potsdam Nursing Home, Potsdam Day Care Center, Potsdam Neighborhood Center, Potsdam Food Co-Op and the County Housing Council.

Cuthbert is a recipient of the Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Board of Directors Service Award for his “exceptional services” to the hospital and community.

He is a past Rotary Club president, a Paul Harris Fellow and founding chair of the club’s award-winning vocational service committee.

Cuthbert received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Michigan and his master of divinity degree from Colgate-Rochester Seminary in Rochester. He came to Potsdam with his late wife, Crystal, in 1968.

The Potsdam Rotary Club meets at noon each Wednesday at Ponderosa in Potsdam. For more information, visit the club’s website at www.potsdamrotary.org.
