CANTON — The North Country Women’s Summer Soccer playoff championship trophy made its way back to Canton after Dave’s II outscored Akwesasne 3-1 in the title game on Thursday at a Canton Central School field.
“It’s been a while,” noted ageless striker Anita Francis, who played a lead role on the Tamarack teams that captured the league playoff title eight of the first 10 years of the tournament, after helping Dave’s II end a seven-year championship drought for a Canton women’s team by scoring a pair of long range goals.
East Division champion Akwesasne opened the scoring 25 minutes into the game when Abby Kelly took a return pass from Karley Cree then lofted a shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out.
Francis tied the game with four minutes left in the first half when she coverted from just outside the penalty after taking a lead pass from Jackie Maynard. Francis tallied the eventual game-winner in similar fashion 24 minutes into the second half before Sara Elliott sealed the win by outracing an Akwesasne defender and goaltender Coree Phillips to a loose ball and knocking it into the back of the net with 10 minutes left.
Megan Evans made seven save in the first half for Canton before Devin Shea came on to preserve the win in the second where she wasn’t counted on to make a save but consistently ended any Akwesasne threats by coming off her line to intercept a steady series of crosses into the penalty area. Phillips finished with six saves backstopping the Akwesasne effort.
