Toney Catania, 93, Watertown, passed away August 10, 2014, at his home under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and his family.
Mr. Catania was born October 5, 1920, in Watertown, a son of Orazio and Rosalia Biondolillo Catania. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1939. From 1942 until 1946 he served in the United States Coast Guard, being honorably discharged. On April 21, 1979, he married Gloria Catanzarite in Watertown by Justice of the Peace Richard Coty. The couple renewed their vows on April 21, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Church with Reverend Donald Robinson officiating.
Before entering the United States Coast Guard, Mr. Catania was employed with the New York Air Brake Co. Returning to the Air Brake after his tour of duty, he completed twelve years in the foundry. Mr. Catania was a local entrepreneur; owning the Main Street Market in Theresa, a laundry mat on West Main Street in Watertown and various vending machines in the area. In 1975, he purchased the Tri-R Car Wash, in 1997 he sold the car wash and retired. He was a co-owner of the Watertown Racquet Club.
Mr. Catania was a member of St. Anthony’s Church. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge #496, American Legion Post #61, the Italian American Civic Association and various bowling leagues. He was an avid Harley Davidson Motorcycle rider, enjoying traveling the countryside and attending Bricklan Car Rally’s. He was a very heart warming and giving man. His life was his family.
Surviving besides his wife are; a son and his wife, David and Kim Catania, Westerville, OH, a daughter and her husband, Toni and Joseph Leone, Watertown, a sister Josephine Johnston, Watertown, his grandchildren and their spouses; Christa Catania, Kimberly and Michael Catania-Cox, David and Trinity Catania, Patrick Fitzgerald, Annie Fitzgerald, Amy and David Renzi, Christopher and Sarah Leone, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A brother Sam Catania and three sisters Croce Augliano, Rose Augliano and Jennie Hartz all died before him.
Calling hours will be Friday from4-7pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. . A prayer service will be held at 9:15 am on Saturday at the funeral home with a 10 am funeral mass at St. Anthony’s Church with Reverend Donald Robinson officiating.
