It’s all about a passion and for the love of the game.

The Place’s Dawn Merz fits that mold.

On Monday evening, even though her softball team was down 11-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Merz was always cracking a joke and playing the game to the very last out.

The Place lost 11-6 on the evening against Howie’s in the semi-finals of the Ogdensburg Women’s Softball League at Champlain Street diamond but Merz produced two hits and played thirdbase like Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt did in the 80’s.

“Dawn just plays the game with her heart,” said Ogdensburg Women’s Softball League President Sherry Deloney.

“Thats why she’s the winner of the 2014 Bobby Klein Memorial Ogdensburg Women’s Softball Award. She comes and plays hard every game. Congratulations and have fun in Florida this weekend.”

Howie’s advances to the finals against defending champion Hosmer’s Marina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the end of the year banquet set for Friday at the Elks Club.

Depending on the weather on Wednesday, the final might be rescheduled to Monday.

Howie scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 11-3 advantage before The Place cashed for three in the bottom.

Jade Vernsey supplied two doubles and a single and Heather Small and Chelsea Martin each connected for three singles leading Howie’s.

Shannon LaFave, Skye Sharpe and Mackenzi Ferguson each singled twice with Stacey Barr adding a hit.

Merz and Amy Richardson each connected for two singles for The Place who won the regular season championship. Holli Jo Cota delievered a double and Jocelyn Fifield and Sierra Dobbs each singled.
