BRIER HILL – Rodney D. Roberts, Jr., is following in his father’s footsteps by opening his own water conditioning business that will serve the entire north country.
Mr. Roberts brings 10 years of service with him from working alongside his father, Rodney, Sr.’s, business, Absolute Water Solutions.
“We were at 3,800 customers at my dad’s business,” Mr. Roberts said. “I felt that it was time for me to go out on my own. It will allow my dad’s business and mine to grow and better serve more customers. We will also each hire an additional employee.”
Mr. Roberts and his wife, Christy, officially opened ABC Water Solutions last week. They said they are hoping their son, Alexzander D. Roberts, 14, will be the third generation in the family to enter into water purifying trade.
Water purification services are especially important to have in the north country, Mr. Roberts said. Bacteria, E. coli, and coliform are becoming more prominent in the north country, especially around farms where manure is spread, he said.
“The north country is full of wells,” Mr. Robert said. “Even the city water takes some type of conditioning. The market is huge, and the need for water purification services isn’t slowing down.”
In addition to homes, Mr. Roberts also installs water purification systems for businesses.
“Restaurants have to have chlorinated water or run the water through an ultraviolet unit to kill the bacteria before they can give it to customers,” Mr. Roberts said. “Nowadays to even sell a home you have to have the water tested for bacteria. If it comes back positive, you have to kill the bacteria before you can even sell the home.”
A water purification system is an investment that will protect home appliances, Mr. Roberts said.
“Without any type of purifying equipment, hard water can damage appliances and dishware,” Mr. Roberts said. “Hard water will leave white deposits on glasses and ruin coffeemakers. It leaves stains in toilets, sinks and bathtubs.”
The water is made drinkable through a reverse osmosis system, which eliminates harmful elements such as radon and arsenic, Mr. Roberts said.
Mr. Rodney said installation of a water purification tank that can fit into almost any closet can cost around $1,200.
“I plan to keep my prices low,” Mr. Roberts said. “Just $500 may make the difference between having and not having the equipment for some families.”
Mr. Roberts said the equipment can last on average for about 15 years. The equipment is maintained yearly and on an emergency basis, he said.
“It’s not something you have to replace every few years,” Mr. Roberts said. “I have units that I still work on that are 25 years old. But they do require an annual service to keep them maintained.
Mr. Roberts said his business serves all areas in the north country.
“We’re pretty much the only place between Watertown and Malone that does installation and setup of certified systems professionally,” Mr. Roberts said.
ABC Water Solutions business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with 24-hour emergency availability.
