Lewis County set to impose wireless surcharge

LOWVILLE — Lewis County residents soon will see an extra county surcharge on their wireless bills.

County legislators last week approved a law that would impose a 30-cent-per-month fee on county wireless customers to help cover ongoing improvements and maintenance of the radio system.

“We thought it would go toward whatever the annual maintenance fee is going to be,” said county Legislature Chairman Michael A. Tabolt, R-Croghan.

While unsure exactly how much money the fee would raise, Mr. Tabolt said officials calculated a take of about $50,000 annually, using the assumption that half the populace uses wireless phone service.

He said the county already imposes a fee on landline phone customers, but people are moving away from landline service in favor of cellphones. Most other counties in the state already have a wireless fee in place, he said.
