MASSENA — Volunteers from Massena Rescue and its dive team saved the life of a dog from the swift current of the St. Lawrence River off Robert Moses State Park this afternoon.
The rescue squad and divers were dispatched at 2:41 p.m., launched the Zodiac rescue boat at the park and retrieved the dog, a chocolate Lab named Aku, at roughly 3:15 p.m.
“It took us a few minutes to get there, because our larger rescue boat, which is normally in the water at the Barnhardt Marina, is out of service,” said Squad Chief Norm F. Worden, who estimated the dog was 500 to 600 feet from the shore when rescuers got to him.
“He was swimming and treading water, but he was getting tired,” Mr. Worden said. “He was happy to see the guys when they got there.”
Aku belongs to a family from St. Philippe, Quebec, camping at the park for the first time.
Diana D. Eldridge and her husband, Eric Caron, were camping with their two children.
