Founder of Norwood Duathlon dies during Hoswegatchie Duathlon

NORWOOD - A man who was active in the Norwood community died Wednesday night after collapsing while biking during the Hoswegatchie Duathlon.

Pete LePage was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Wednesday night, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Kent Fetter, Mr. LePage’s neighbor and a fellow Norwood athlete, had known him since Mr. Fetter was a freshman in college.

“He actually helped us find property. He was a really community-oriented guy,” Mr. Fetter said.

Mr. LePage was one of the founders of the Norwood Duathlon, he said.

“He was the one who originated it. He was running it. He was there every race,” Mr. Fetter said.

Mr. LePage had served as head of the village Recreation Department until last year, he said.

“He did so much at the beach in Norwood,” Mr. Fetter said.

He also worked behind the scenes in establishing the playground on the Village Green, and brought the Clarkson Rowing Team to Norwood.

“He really cared about people. He was big on giving back to the community,” he said. “When I think of the Norwood-Norfolk track, when it was switched from cinder to all-weather, he was one of the guys that was right behind that. He took pride in that.”

Mr. LePage also stayed physically active, always heading out for a bicycle ride.

“Every time I went by, he was getting set to go out and ride. He was a great cyclist,” Mr. Fetter said.

He called Mr. LePage’s death “a great loss.”

“He was a good family man. I was shocked today to find out. He’s done so much around here,” he said.
