GOUVERNEUR - Ray J. Zira, 81, Route 24, Fullerville, died Saturday at his home.
Born November 27, 1932, in Rockville, Connecticut, the son of Frank and Anna (Ray) Zira., he graduated from Rockville High School.
He entered the United States Army in 1953 and served his country, being honorably discharged in 1955.
Ray married Diane (Patricia) Sweeney on Feb. 5, 1955 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Rockville, with the Rev. Patrick Mahoney officiating.
Mr. Zira worked as an electrician for B & M Electrical, North Carolina, until he retired. At one time he had worked for Mercer’s in Gouverneur.
He enjoyed fishing, skeet shooting and tinkering in small engine repair. He loved spending time with his family and was affectionately nicknamed “Harry”.
Surviving Ray are his three sons and their wives, Daniel and Cherie Zira, and Michael and Lorinda Zira , all of Gouverneur and Kennedy and Tracy Zira of Chesapeake, Virginia; a sister, Barbara Powers, Tolland, Connecticut; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife, Diane on Apr. 23, 2002, son, Ray Jr., on Oct. 11, 1997, a daughter, Michelle Zira, on Dec. 23, 1962, and his brother In law Joseph Sweeney.
A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 2 pm at St. James Church, Gouverneur, with Rev. Stephen Rocker officiating.
