LOWVILLE — Daniel N. Taylor has issued a hair-raising challenge to the community.

The chief executive officer of the Lowville Food Pantry will get his head shaved if $10,000 is donated to the pantry over a 30-day period ending Sept. 11.

“With the number of families we are seeing, we need all the help we can get,” Mr. Taylor said.

The pantry at 7646 Forest Ave. helped 257 families in July, up about 30 percent from prior months and up 42 percent from 180 families in July 2013, he said.

“It just keeps going up and up, and we have to find ways to raise money to buy the food,” Mr. Taylor said.

While admitting that he may have “a few screws loose” for embarking on the hair-cutting challenge, the pantry director said he had heard about other people using similar methods to raise money and thought he would try it here.

And, with the pantry requiring $3,000 to $4,000 per month to keep adequate food on its shelves, the need is great, Mr. Taylor said.

“Just like with any other business, prices go up,” he said.

Mr. Taylor said “100 percent of all funds we raise go toward the pantry.”

The Lowville Food Pantry is open 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
