WAVERLY — Construction of a new timber dam on the St. Regis River in Waverly is now set to begin on Monday.
The project has been pushed back a few times due to the owners not having obtained necessary permits.
Waverly Highway Superintendent Harold Fraser said Azure Mountain Power Co. timber dam co-owner Everett Smith still needs to receive his Department of Environmental Conservation permit. He expects to receive that permit this week, Mr. Fraser said. Mr. Smith does have a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fraser said at the Town Board’s regular July meeting on Monday.
Mr. Fraser previously said the water behind the dam won’t be lowered for the project.
The existing timber dam has been a growing concern because of its deteriorating condition. The dam was further damaged in April when ice floes carried by a river swollen by rain and melting snow destroyed several boards at the top of the structure.
