PORT LEYDEN — Three village residents were charged by Lewis County sheriff’s deputies after allegedly being seen throwing a firework from a vehicle near Lincoln Street.
Deputies said that after being spotted about 2 a.m. Saturday, the driver of the vehicle, Andrew S. Weber, 23, of 7369 Wildcat Road, fled on foot toward East Main Street, leaving his three passengers behind.
At the car, deputies charged Mitchell E. Melinitz, 23, of 7485 Moose River Road, with having an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of fireworks and disorderly conduct. Robert B. Shue, 20, of 3543 Kelpytown Road, was charged with unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage by a person under 21 years of age and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Mr. Weber turned himself in to deputies Monday and subsequently was charged with unlawful possession of fireworks, failure to comply with a lawful order of a police officer, operating a motor vehicle with obstructed view, stopping on pavement and leaving a motor vehicle unattended.
Deputies said state police aided their investigation.
