TIME WITH FAMILY – What a glorious weekend this past one was – it was a time to be together as family, away from commitments and jobs. Our sons had planned the weekend with every detail so very special. Our family stayed together in a cottage on the shore of Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. The view was spectacular and listening to the waves striking the shoreline so soothing and comforting.
I grew up in the small community of Dresden, which is located on Seneca Lake. My piano teacher, our doctor and my junior high school were all located in nearby Penn Yan, on Keuka Lake. We moved during my freshman year in high school to Danby, near Ithaca, which is on another Finger Lake, Cayuga Lake. Each lake has beauty of its own and marvelous, fun activities and events to find on a visit there.
Our state is amazing in its vast offerings – from New York City and Broadway lights and sports teams, to the Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Finger Lakes. I would urge you to include a trip southward to the Finger Lakes when you are planning your next vacation. Or if a child’s sporting event takes you to the Southern Tier, take a moment to dine on the water’s edge or just look at the spectacular scenery as you drive to and from events.
The past few days have been so beautiful with blue sky, perfect clouds floating by and the sun shining brightly. A summer weekend in the Finger Lakes was perfect, but I know a fall day would also be a marvelous way to spend a weekend.
As we traveled this past weekend the colors of the leaves had begun to change – many are brightly colored reds and shades of orange. Seeing the colors changing in August was somewhat unsettling, but as we visited we soon realized they were a harbinger of what is to come – the spectacular fall colors in the Finger Lake region are truly extraordinary.
The New York state north country is truly a marvelous place to live and call home – and every area of our state is truly an amazing place to visit and enjoy on your way home to the north country.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME – Although we had a terrific time this past weekend with marvelous meals in amazing venues, there was one stop that made me miss Massena!
We were the first to arrive at our destination near Seneca Lake. While waiting for our family to arrive, we decided to stop at a small, local ice cream shop. This place could not compare to Rapidz at all! My I missed Tyler as I attempted to place my order. It was early afternoon and I had not had a good cup of coffee since breakfast. My lunchtime coffee was purchased at a gas station convenience store and truly was not a four star experience!
I asked for a cup of coffee (at Rapidz I was made an excellent cup of coffee on my visit there!). I was told they didn’t serve coffee! Horrors! Who on earth doesn’t serve coffee?
I was standing at the counter so placed an order for two ice cream items – we ordered an ice cream cone and I ordered a strawberry sundae. The ice cream in my sundae looked odd when it arrived, but I thought perhaps it was a new kind of strawberry ice cream. We went to our car (there was no dining inside!). I began to consume my sundae and soon realized the ice cream was indeed coffee ice cream!
I love hot coffee, but really do not enjoy cold coffee ice cream at all – especially not in a strawberry sundae!
Yes, on our weekend trip to Seneca Lake, I truly missed Tyler at Rapidiz – he has never confused my order and always has had a cup of hot coffee ready when requested! And for that I am most grateful!
WARMEST WISHES – My warmest birthday wishes are sent to Marge Beaubien today. She is a remarkable woman. I always look forward to our paths crossing – especially on Wednesdays! Yes, Marge, I am looking forward to actually visiting over coffee – soon! My warmest wishes for only the best as your celebrate your birthday this year.
BIRTHDAY WISHES – A terrific gentleman, Bruce Truax, will celebrate his birthday tomorrow. He is an amazing man – always there for family and friends in need especially when that need involves mowing the lawn or lending a helping hand. My heartfelt thanks for all you do Bruce and my warmest wishes on your birthday.
AND ON SATURDAY – Wally Cornell will celebrate his birthday on Saturday. What an extraordinary gentleman he is – when you are at Cornell’s take a moment and visit with Wally and learn the history of Cornell’s Cleaning – and something about Wally and Massena, too!
My heartfelt thanks, Wally, for all you do for others and for this community. Stop by Cornell’s cleaning on Main Street this week to wish this fine gentleman a very happy birthday and only the best as he celebrates.
SUNDAY CELEBRATION – There is a birthday celebration on Sunday for another fine gentleman who also does so much for others. Bernie Hazelton will celebrate his birthday on Sunday. He is a truly amazingly talented man. I love to listen to him play the piano – the chords are wonderful. And Bernie on the trumpet and singing is also marvelous to listen to! Wonderful!
Bernie is one of the good people in this world always thinking of others and there to lend a helping hand for neighbors and friends.
My warmest wishes, Bernie, for only the best this year as you celebrate your special day. You certainly do deserve only the very best.
ON BIRTHDAYS – Actor Jeff Bridges was being interviewed on a talk show recently. The topic of birthdays was raised. He responded that he felt every birthday should be celebrated because every birthday was a milestone! And I agree!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Think of giving not as a duty, but as a privilege. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
