Firefighters bring affordable medical supplies closer to home

MADRID — In an effort to bring more affordable equipment to fellow volunteers in the north country, two firefighters have partnered to start their own medical and safety supply company.

Jennifer S. Collins and her partner, Matthew R. Carr, created an emergency medical and safety supply company, Hero’s Haven, in February 2013 after noticing that supplies for emergency responders were too costly for volunteers when they ordered them online or by catalogue. Now the two are is looking to expand the business to provide safety gear and supplies to construction businesses, schools, police agencies and physicians.

“We can now help nursing physicians’ assistants, physicians, schools, construction, with everything from steel-toe boots and safety vests, to first-aid kits, AED (automated external defibrillator) machines, pagers and lights for vehicles for emergency responders, including police,” Ms. Collins said. “We also can program certain pagers, as well.”

On the Internet and by phone, the business offers a wide range of safety and medical equipment for students, volunteers and professionals. Ms. Collins said the company offers special rates for students looking to purchase first-responder kits and packs.

“We offer packs for the basic stuff they need in order to learn from — blood pressure-stethoscope combos, pocket masks, pen lights and trauma shears,” she said.

As an authorized reseller of wholesale items from companies such as Moore Medical, Hero’s Haven can offer products at retail prices, Ms. Collins said.

“I started this because our little EMS and fire departments have tiny budgets and they are constantly being cut, and it’s only getting worse” she said. “Our main goal is to help those departments stay ahead.”

She said many new state and federal mandates have put pressure on fire departments to replace expensive equipment sooner.

“A lot of the time, the supplies that you are mandated to carry, you won’t use them in the time before they expire, like defibrillator pads,” she said. “Adult AED and pediatric pads — God forbid you have to use them — but if you don’t use them, you end up throwing away hundreds of dollars.”

Now an advanced emergency medical critical care technician, Ms. Collins started her EMT training when she joined Parishville’s volunteer rescue squad in 2003. She now teaches classes at SUNY Canton for EMTs in training.

Mr. Carr, who has been a firefighter for eight years, started out as a junior firefighter in the Madrid Fire and Rescue Explorers Program.

Hero’s Haven already has served volunteers in the Waddington, Norfolk, DeKalb, Madrid and Heuvelton fire departments, Ms. Collins said. The business is taking orders for safety supplies from SUNY Canton and several construction companies. A listing of the products is available at www.shop.heros-haven.com.

“We are flexible. If you need something, just ask,” Ms. Collins said. “If we can’t get it for you, we will direct you to someone who can.”

The website also serves as a place to sell and buy firetrucks and ambulances on behalf of Adirondack Fire Equipment.

“We primarily serve Franklin Essex and Clinton counties,” Ms. Collins said. “We can help any other individuals in any other county, as well. If they want to sell and get more publicity for their vehicles, we can help them do that and put it on our website, which gets national recognition.”

Ms. Collins said she hopes eventually to expand the business to include a warehouse that would better serve hospitals and clinics.
