CANTON — Traditonal Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) invites newcomers and old-timers alike to stop in and learn about what makes the North Country special at The TAUNY Center in Canton on September 12 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.
With exhibits and programs that present and describe the North Country way of life, The TAUNY Center is a great place to get acquainted with your new home. And if you’ve been here a while, help us welcome new people to our region and start some new friendships. Light, local specialties will be served alongside a cash bar provided by the Blackbird Café, and guests will have an opportunity to meet new people, ask questions, tour The TAUNY Center, enjoy a variety of exhibits, listen to some lively music, and relax with new neighbors and friends. Information about regional attractions and services will also be available.
One great way to learn about the region or appreciate it anew is through the variety of North Country experience and artistry expressed in TAUNY’s permanent and rotating exhibits. At the reception, TAUNY will unveil a new exhibit designed to introduce the North Country to visitors and newcomers. Other ongoing exhibits include: “Every Single Day: Life on North Country Dairy Farms,” the North Country Wall of Fame, the Fiberistas’ “Slice Quilt” of Canton, and a collection of baskets made by TAUNY Heritage Award winner and recent NEA National Heritage Fellowship recipient Henry Arquette of Akwesasne. A documentary about Arquette will also be showing in the TAUNY screening room. During the evening, music will be provided by fiddler Jake Brillhart. Now a student at St. Lawrence University, Brillhart grew up in rural Vermont and began learning Cape Breton and Scottish style fiddle at the age of eleven when he inherited his grandfather’s violin. More recently, he has played extensively with Adirondack Folk Singer Alex Smith, an experience Jake says “has brought a hint of Yankee into his bow.”
The Welcome Open House is free and all are welcome. This reception is made possible by the generous support of Gray and Gray CPAs, P.C.
