Fall concert series at St. Lawrence University

CANTON — St. Lawrence University’s fall concert series will kick off with the percussive sounds of Kwaku Kwaakye (Martin) Obeng at 8 p.m. on September 5, in the Launders Underground (Noble Center, room 001). The performance is free and open to the public.

Obeng is a composer, educator, dancer and master drummer who has worked internationally for the last 25 years. A native of Ghana, he began drumming at age five and by 17 had been appointed Royal Court Drummer to the chief of the Aburi-Akuapim region of Eastern Ghana.

Obeng toured West Africa as a drummer and dancer with Ghana’s National Arts Council Folkloric Company and later moved to the U.S., where he worked with the New England based Talking Drum Ensemble. He has taught drumming and dance at Brown University since 1988.
