MASSENA — The recent Holy Family High School MegaReunion not only brought old friends back together for a celebration, but also brought in more than $2,000 for a good cause.

Coordinators Ray Fenton and Dan Case presented a check for $2,068 to Trinity Catholic School officials Thursday morning — money raised through the weekend-long event.

“We will be using (the money) for scholarships and also put the donation toward our annual fund that we do every year. This will help every child be able to have the benefit of having a great education,” Principal Kathleen M. Behrens said.

“I wasn’t expecting anything. Dan Case called me last week and said that the MegaReunion would like to present a check to Trinity Catholic School because of our connection with the Catholic education in Massena,” she said.

The MegaReunion took place the weekend of Aug. 16 and drew more than 500 graduates from the defunct school.

Mr. Fenton said organizers were pleasantly surprised by the size of the surplus left over.

“It was more than we anticipated because there were people that actually sent in more money than the $40 per person that was requested. That’s how we ended up with that surplus,” he said. “It was just decided that we were going to give it to Trinity right off the bat. There was no argument, no fight, no nothing. It was going to Trinity.”

The 1969 Holy Family High School graduate said that the choice to donate the additional money was not difficult.

“A Catholic education is probably the best education anyone can get. I did 18 years of Catholic education, and we just want to keep it alive,” Mr. Fenton said.

“(Dan Case) and I were both past principals here so it meant a great deal to both of us,” former Trinity Catholic School Principal Joan M. Rufa said.
