Potsdam Humane Society contract stays the same with Parishville

PARISHVILLE — The town of Parishville’s contract with the Potsdam Humane Society in 2015 will remain unchanged.

Humane Society Director Alysia M. Maynard approached town officials with the proposed contract recently.

“The contract fee isn’t going to change. It’s going to stay at $3,900 for the year 2015,” Ms. Maynard said. “This is because last year there was a 10 percent decrease and then the animals jumped up since last year. So basically each year it’s going to depend on the number of animals that come in. So when the numbers go up, the contract goes up, and when the numbers go down, the contract typically goes down.”

Beginning last year, the Humane Society implemented an annual contract review process to access the number of animals that are coming from each municipality.

The board of directors for the shelter put in place a cap to set the maximum increase at 15 percent for 2015.

“I can say that two-thirds of the operating costs of the shelter are still paid by private donations and grants and things like that,” Ms. Maynard said.

She said the Humane Society received 40, or 4 percent, of its animals from the town of Parishville in 2013, compared with 17 animals in 2012, and Parishville paid for 1 percent of the shelter’s total costs.
