Catholic Charities is the sponsor for the NYS Long Term Care Ombudsman Program in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis Counties. The Ombudsman volunteers working in this program visit with the residents in long term care facilities, nursing homes and adult homes. The program’s purpose is to ensure the rights of the residents and the volunteers help solve problems the residents may be experiencing.

The Ombudsman Program coordinator, Winny Sachno, is planning a certification training later this fall and is recruiting for volunteers interested in working in this program. Volunteers are needed in each county but especially in Jefferson County, for facilities in Carthage and Watertown.

The local program is looking for volunteers who are empathetic, diplomatic and good communicators to become volunteers.

The Ombudsman will help residents improve their quality of daily life by empowering them, or by advocating on the resident’s behalf to solve problems they are unable to resolve on their own. Volunteers are certified, the local program coordinator and staff from the New York State Ombudsman Program will provide the necessary certification training and also on-going training and support.

Volunteers dedicate about 4 hours per week at the facility they are assigned to. If you would like to find out more, contact Winny Sachno at 393-2255 or Cristina Perez in Watertown at 788-4330, or to request an interview and a volunteer application.

Certification training dates will be from October 6 until October 9.
