Taxi Zero Transport pushes for changes to village maximum taxi fare rate

POTSDAM — With their business adding drivers, the owners of Taxi Zero Transport, which operates in the village, said they feel the maximum rate for taxi fares set by the village is inadequate for expanding their business.

At a village board meeting Tuesday, owner Elisa M. Meyers requested that the village change its rate ordinance to allow for variation of fares according to the duration, distance and time of day of a cab ride, or remove the maximum rate altogether.

Mrs. Meyers said that with a business that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, late night calls are costing her more in labor than she is making in fares.

“Sometimes we have to send an employee on one run at 3 a.m. Although the employee and customer may be engaged for less than 10 minutes, our costs for paying that employee can be as much as 20 minutes, depending on the circumstances,” she said.

John D. Meyers, who operates vehicles for the business, called the maximum rate stifling, and said a minimum rate would be more favorable.

“A minimum rate idea seems to be more conducive to business growth,” he said, citing minimum rates for taxi services operating in Canton and Watertown.

Village officials responded by requesting more information on rates from Taxi Zero Transport, before acting to change the ordinance. Mr. Meyers agreed to email the desired rate information to Mayor Steven W. Yurgartis.
