Christmas in August collects donations at inaugural event

CARTHAGE — There was a little bit of everything except for snow at the inaugural Christmas in August event Aug. 30.

The event, presented by Secret Window Photography, garnered 115 toys which were donated, minus a few, to the Good Samaritan Society of St. James Church for distribution during the Christmas season. Admission to the event was a new, unwrapped toy, a few of which were given to a young child who recently lost everything in a house fire in Rutland.

Good Samaritan member Yvonne Ablan said the church has been distributing Christmas gifts to children for more than 22 years.

Fellow member Nancy Tolley added toys are given to children of all denominations and that the toys collected would be shared with other organizations.

A motorcycle poker run which started at West Carthage Fire Department, preceded the event at Carthage Park. About a dozen bikes, some with Teddy bears peeking out the windshield, participated.

Events at the park included a car cruise-in, food, a beer garden, craft vendors, Chinese auction and a number of local bands. Providing music with Musicology working the sound board were Amarillo, Dave Scanlin from Tough Luck, Kelsey Fraser of Supertonic, Ryan Hardy, New York May, Yield to the Blind and Autumn’s Last Fall.

The West Carthage Fire Department sold food and drinks to benefit the volunteer fire department.

Organizer Amanda Gump said her family back in Kingman, Ariz., had always helped out in the “Christmas Vision” project.

“Growing up, we would spend every weekend in December wrapping toys to give to needy children,” she said, noting the group would often utilize a fire truck to make the Christmas deliveries.

“Overall, it was a great event,” Mrs. Gump said of the inaugural Christmas in August. “We had less of a turn out than we had hoped for but it was good for the first year.”

She hopes to make it an annual event.
