GOUVERNEUR - Organized labor threw its support behind 12 Democrats running for the St. Lawrence County Legislature, made no endorsements in three county board races where Republican candidates are unopposed and backed the challenger in the mayoral race in Massena during a meeting of the Central Trades and Labor Council meeting Wednesday night.

Ronald P. McDougall, president of the region’s Central Trades Council, said a good crowd of union leaders were at a session called to make endorsements in the races for seats on the county legislature.

He said there was a strong showing from the union that represents the majority of union employees in county government. “CSEA was here in full force, and there was also a strong CSEA presence from Massena to talk about the mayoral race there,” according to the local labor leader.

Mr. McDougall said only one Republican candidate for the county legislature, John H. Burke, made a presentation to the members of organized labor.

He said union officials are focused on the fall races for seats on the county board. “The public sector races are very interested and will be doing phone banks for candidates and things of that nature,” Mr. McDougall said.

“I heard commitments tonight in terms of financial support, dialing power and foot power,” he added.

The endorsements included incumbents:

• District 1, Vernon D. “Sam” Burns, D-Ogdensburg

• District 5, Donald A. Peck, D-Gouverneur

• District 6, Frederick S. Morrill, D-DeKalb

• District 9, Stephen M. Putman, D-Canton

• District 10, Jim A. Bunstone, D-Potsdam

• District 12, Jason A. Clark, D-Norfolk

The Central Trades Council also endorsed three Democrats running in contested races for seats being vacated by incumbent lawmakers. Those endorsements included:

• District 4, Michele W. McQueer, Hammond

• District 7, Rick Perkins, Parishville

• District 11, Ryan C. Warr

Incumbent legislators Gregory M. Paquin, D-Massena, Jonathan S. Putney, D-Waddington, and Anthony J. Arquiett, D-Helena, also received labor’s support. They are unopposed in their bids for re-election.

No endorsements were made in the races where Joseph R. Lightfoot, R-Ogdensburg, Kevin D. Acres, R-Madrid, and David W. Forsythe, Lisbon, are unopposed.

The Central Trades Council also endorsed Timothy J. Currier, a Democrat, in his bid to unseat incumbent Mayor James F. Hidy in Massena.
