Public asked to help with Canton business guide

CANTON — The public is being asked to provide input for a new online business guide that’s being created to showcase Canton businesses and services.

Canton Economic Development Director Linda M. McQuinn said village and town officials want to make sure the guide has accurate information and does not exclude any businesses.

The latest version is at the Canton website: www.canton

“This is a work in progress,” Ms. McQuinn said. “We need help from the community to know what’s missing. That’s our emphasis right now.”

To save money, she said, paper copies of the business guide no longer will be printed, but people can access it from the website and then print it out.

Last year, $5,000 was spent printing the business guide, distributed within and outside of St. Lawrence County.

The updated guide includes 63 additional businesses and services. Also, eight categories have been added, including service organizations and venues.

Ms. McQuinn, who works on a contract basis, said she hired Ginger Thomas to focus on the project. Ms. Thomas reached out to 250 new and existing businesses. As a result, 135 updates were made to the guide.

Since the last guide was prepared, many businesses have created websites that are now listed in the business guide.

Some new businesses have opened in Canton since the last guide was published, including the Bagelry and the Dollar Tree store. Also, Save-A-Lot grocery store is scheduled to open this month, and the Canton Flea Market is expected to reopen Oct. 1 in University Plaza.
