This 1940-era postcard shows U.S. Army troops ‘detraining’ at the former Canton Central Railroad Station in June 1940. The arrival of soldiers — to participate in maneuvers in St. Lawrence County to prepare for World War II — was a major patriotic event in Canton and an occasion which attracted children to greet the GIs and hear the Army band, lower right. Fred Rollins of the Potsdam Public Museum will talk about ‘The Trains and Trolleys of St. Lawrence County’ at noon Saturday for a free PowerPoint ‘History at Noon’ program at the museum, in the Potsdam Civic Center. Refreshments will be provided.
