Nutcracker Dancer

I used a long exposure and flash to blur and stop the motion of this Nutcracker dancer. I wish there were more lights streaking across the frame, but I think it resembles the spirit of the Christmas season. I will probably try something like this again sometime.

Tunnel Work

While looking for a different way to photograph construction workers, I got inside the drainage pipe they were working on near the Salmon Run Mall, and waited for the right moment. Good thing I'm not claustrophobic.

To Iraq

This was my first published photo at the Daily Times, so personally it holds a little sentimental value.

These 280 Soldiers of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade were heading to Norhtern Iraq. I think this photo captures the mood of departure and the anonymity that a large number of American soldiers can sometimes have.

Inside the Lines

What I like about this photo is the peak action and clean background as Adriana Spicer tries to keep the ball in bounds. My strobe light was close and to her left side, giving the players some dimension.

Buzzin'

I was driving through Great Bend in early fall when I saw 72 year old Wayne Ridsdale up against 40 cords of wood to be cut for his outdoor boiler. We chatted while he rested his back, and when he was ready for another bout I shot this with a flash to emphasize the flying chips.

Rural Skater

While out in the middle of nowhere for a real estate assignment, I couldn't miss this skateboarder, Wesley Justice, in the middle of the road. Having grown up in rural Minnesota I can relate to having to 'make your own fun,' as my parents often told me to do.

I was glad I had the 300mm lens to keep a shallow depth of field and got low to get more of the yellow road stripes in the frame.

Roof Rake

While driving around Black River I spotted Jackie O'Brien, who had a way of smiling as he worked, using a roof rake. I tried a few shots from the ground, but decided in order to do him justice I should get up on the roof. When I was done shooting I felt like I should have had him throw me a shovel. I was, after all, right next to the snow he was trying to remove.

Horse Herd

Due to some past experiences I am mildly-moderately terrified of horses, so being in, around, and about this herd for our Farm and Garden issue was a little nerve wracking at first.

The longer I stayed and didn't get kicked in the head, the better I felt. I put the sun behind the brown horse and used a flash to fill the shadow it casted. The white one on the left reminds me of a rocking horse.

High Lights

As soon as I ventured out on a mild winter day I saw this man changing stop light bulbs near the picturesque First Baptist Church. I chose this angle because it takes you up into his little world and away from the busyness of Public Square.

Dog Days

While out on a snowy January day I spotted Nadine Stagnolia in a black coat with her black lab shelter dog, Cady, enjoying the weather at their home on Mountaineer Estates. She came from Germany three months ago with her husband, a Fort Drum soldier, and told me that all of her friends warned her about the snowy weather.

She said she was a fan of the snow, and it seemed that Cady was too. In this photo I like the contrast of their matching black against the snow, and the interaction framed by the trees and bushes.
