NORTH COUNTRY OVERVIEW

Residents refer to the tri-county area of Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties as the "north country." Jefferson County is also the home of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. The north country remains the birthplace of a number of familiar items that include Lifesavers candy, Car-Freshner Corp., and safety pins, among others.

Numerous people of note have referred to the north country as "home" at some point in their lives such as former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, actor Viggo Mortensen, supermodel Maggie Rizer, actor Richard Grieco, and actress Mary-Margaret Humes.

FORT DRUM

Fort Drum has been a part of the north country for more than a century, having been founded in 1908 as Pine Plains. It became Pine Camp at the start of World War II, then Camp Drum in 1951 for Lt. Gen. Hugh A. Drum who commanded the First Army during World War II. The Army designated the post Fort Drum in 1974 after it assigned a permanent garrison there.
